Studio portrait of 458 Private (Pte) Abia George Neville (served as George Neville), 2nd Australian Machine Gun Company from Norwood, South Australia. A 23 year old share broker prior to enlisting on 22 March 1915, he embarked for overseas service with B Company, 21st Infantry Battalion from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 10 May 1915. While serving at Gallipoli, he was taken ill on 17 October and evacuated to hospital in Malta where he remained until he returned to Egypt in January 1916. After arriving in France in March, he later transferred to the 6th Machine Gun Company in October 1916. Although promoted to lance corporal on 15 November 1917, a month later, he reverted to private at his own request and transferred to the 2nd Machine Gun Company. On 3 November 1918, Pte Neville was sent to hospital in Abbeville, France with influenza and later died of broncho-pneumonia on 15 November 1918. He is buried in the Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, Abbeville.
