Japanese POW & internees embark on the Daikai Maru for repatriation
Description
On 2 March 1946, 2,500 Japanese POW and internees embarked on the first Japanese vessel to use Sydney Harbour since the cessation of hostilities. The prisoners arrived at No 1 Wharf, Balmain, NSW, by train and were immediately taken on board after identification check. QX6392 Major General Eric Clive Pegus Plant, and 33 (VX20308) Lieutenant General Frank Horton Berryman accompanied by Commander Knight, Royal Naval Reserve, carried out an inspection of the ship and watched the prisoners go aboard.
