Departure of POW by Catalina flying boat for Darwin
To date, some fifteen thousand ex POW have been processed by 3 Australian POW Reception Group. Each man undergoes a medical and dental examination and is issued with clothing, equipment and new paybooks. The group is split into two camps, 8 Camp which deals with Australian personnel and 7 Camp which deals with British personnel. Rations, tentage and canteen stores are supplied by US Army 5 Replacement Unit. All canteen goods are supplied free to POWs. (9 September 1945) Each morning three Catalina amphibians leave Manila for the journey to Australia, each carrying twenty ex-POW. The first stop is overnight at Morotai. The second night is spent at Darwin, NT where the troops change the Liberator aircraft for the trip to Sydney, NSW.
