Occupation Rabaul
Description
At 07.30 HMAS Manoora and SS Katoomba laden with troops and escorted by HMAS Vendetta and other RAN vessels, arrived in Simpson Harbour after a Japanese liaison party had been contacted. First troops to disembark and head inland were the 29/46th Australian Infantry Battalion. Throughout the day barges unloaded men and stores from the troopships. Brigadier NX140 Cedric Rupert Vaughan Edgar DSO was the first senior officer ashore. He was later followed by Major General NX3 Kenneth William Eather CBE DSO ED, General Officer Commanding 11 Australian Division.
