Waltzing Matilda
Italian ambulance captured near Tobruk in the first Libyan campaign and now used by No.3 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force. During the withdrawal it was driven by an Italian Prisoner-of-war who was apparently reluctant to leave his captors. It was used throughout the Syrian campaign and at the time of the sketch, was at the border of Libya. There are two ambulances in the Squadron, this one being used as a dispensary. The staff sleep in partly dug-out tent at side. From December 1941, to January 1942 (when the artist left the Squadron) this ambulance has travelled as far as Antelat, south Benghazi and had been successfully with-drawn to Gazala. "Kangaroo with Wings" is the Squadron's Motor Transport emblem. Advanced Landing Ground, No.112, Egypt.
