Night life in a Turret, HMAS "Sydney"
Description
The war at sea does not stop at lights out - it usually begins. This sketch was made in B turret of HMAS "Sydney". While "closed up" sleep is permissible - if one can get it - newspapers, overalls, overcoats or perhaps a blanket complete the bed. While some sleep others play cards or read, but the receivers' headphone remains always in position. When contact is being made with the deck through the back door of the turret, all lights with the exception of two blue ones are switched off. A mug of "hot kai" (thick navy cocoa) provides a welcome back in the watch. Day and night one or more complete units of the ships' armament remain closed up ready for immediate action.
