Inside the fort, Chanak
Description
In 1919 Lambert accompanied the Australian Historical Mission to Gallipoli. This painting shows buildings inside a fort at Chanak, seen through a large gap in the walls. The fort 'Kale Sultanieh' is at the entrance to the Dardanelles on the Asian side, and is one of a chain of forts and gun emplacements that prevented the British and French navies in 1915 from forcing their way through the narrows towards Constantinople.
