Description

Depicts a group of Allied prisoners of war gathered around the stove in a hut, some sitting on boxes and beds warming themselves around a pot belly stove. Many Australians had never before experienced such bitterly cold winters as those they endured while prisoners of war in Europe. Their facial features almost indistinguishable; ghosts of their former selves before capture. Comber's depiction of the deprivations experienced by POWs is made all the more poignant because Comber himself was a prisoner of war for two and a half years in camps in Italy and Germany.
