Gefangen [Captured]
Description
Depicts tired and exhausted German soldiers who have been captured as prisoners of war, walking down a road in a bedraggled fashion. A dead soldier lies beside the road and a landscape with houses and trees is behind the soldiers. Grosz's early expectations that "war will not only rekindle repressed instincts which lie dormant inside us all, but also truly liberate people" very soon proved to have been illusory. His rapidly-drawn lithographs graphically express his deep anger at the misery caused by war. His choice of lithography as a medium was a purely democratic one, enabling more people to see his work.
