GERMAN TELEPHONE BATTERY BOX, FABRICATED FROM FINGER-JOINTED OAK PANELS. METAL CLASP ON FRONT SECURES LID. TWO TERMINALS ON RIGHT SIDE. CONTAINS ONE BATTERY. ORIGINALLY CONTAINED THREE BATTERIES CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER . THE LID ORIGINALLY WAS ORIGINALLY OUTFITTED WITH A WIRING DIAGRAM AND A PHONETIC ALPHABET - BOTH MISSING.


History / Summary

This box was used to power a German field telephone. It was captured from a German officer during the attack near Ville-sur-ancre on 19th May 1918. Lt Clayton (18th Bn) was awarded an MC for his leadership and bravery during this action.
