Binoculars : Lance Corporal A Hill, 1st Australian Horse
Pair of brass binoculars featuring a centrally mounted focus adjusting wheel.
Used by Lance Corporal Alexander Hill in South Africa. Hill was born in Tumut, New South Wales in 1874. He worked as a stockman in Brungle, New South Wales, while serving as a private in the 1st Australian Horse. Hill served with one of the units contingents to South Africa, seeing action in some of the conflicts earlier battles. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 17 February 1900 but was later invalided back to Australia, arriving home in on 6 August 1900. In April 1902 Hill enlisted to serve in South Africa for a second time, joining the 3rd Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse. The unit arrived in South Africa on 30 April 1902, one month before the end of the war, and saw no active service.
