Brass turnbuckle for wire bracing : Baron Manfred von Richthofen, Geschwader 1, German Air Service
Description
Brass Turnbuckle 3" long. The central portion is pierced by a through hole, into which a tommy rod would have been fitted to allow the turnbuckle to be tightened.
History / Summary
This turnbuckle was taken from Baron Manfred von Richthofen's Fokker Dr 1. Turnbuckles were used for tightening the bracing wire on areas of the Dr 1 such as the undercarriage, cabane or tail assembly. This specimen was souvenired by Major Leslie Beavis, commanding the 53rd Battery of the 14th Artillery brigade. Two of Beavis' men had fired their Lewis guns at the aircraft, and Beavis firmly believed it was their fire that had brought the Baron to ground.
