Lewis Mark II Aircraft Machine Gun
Lewis Mark II Aircraft Machine Gun. The action has a small right hand cocking lever, a wooden pistol grip and a leather covered rear spade grip for an oil brush (missing). The receiver top plate is marked around the rear aperture sight 'Manufactured by The Birmingham Small Arms Co England' (top) with 'for Armes Automatique Lewis Belgium' (below) and 'LEWIS AUTO GUN MOD 1914 PAT' (near the magazine). The air cooled barrel does not have a finned alloy radiator and the casing jacket is a smaller diameter to the Mark I infantry gun. The fore sight is a square mount on top of the case and there is no rear sight. It has a 47 round pan magazine and a leather carry handle attached to the jacket casing top. Missing the bolt mechanism and the flash hider from the muzzle.
This type of Lewis gun was used on SE5a aircraft during the First World War. This gun is attached to the upper wing of the Memorial's SE5a (RELAWM11091).
