On board the training ship Vernon, Sydney Harbour
Description
Scenes of life on board the training ship Vernon in Sydney harbour, NSW, where boys 'either as criminals or as neglected children' were housed, educated, and taught a trade until they were old enough to be apprenticed. The training also encouraged them to be proficient in naval exercises such as gun and cutlass drill, making sail, reefing, steering, etc,. This illustration after an original sketch by George Ashton was published in the Illustrated Australian News 14 May 1884, page 73.
