115 Private John (Jack) Burns, 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance (LHFA) from Parramatta, NSW was a 27 year old station hand prior to enlisting on 17 October 1914. He embarked for overseas with A Section from Sydney on 23 September 1914 aboard HMAT Southern (A27). After arriving in Egypt, he transferred to the 6th Light Horse Regiment and served with them at Gallipoli where he was promoted to Second Lieutenant on 6 July 1915. He was then promoted to Lieutenant on 25 September 1915. After being admitted to hospital in Cairo on 9 June 1916 with chronic bronchitis, he was returned to Australia and was admitted to hospital in Sydney. He re-embarked for overseas on 28 October 1916 and after arriving in Egypt was transferred to the 1st Light Horse Brigade and was promoted to Captain (Capt) on 16 February 1917. Capt Burns was admitted to hospital in Cairo on 6 July 1917 with tuberculosis and subsequently returned to Australia and was discharged medically unfit for further service on 14 December 1917.
From a collection relating to the service of Captain Piero Fiaschi, Australian Army Medical Corps, (later Lieutenant-Colonel, OBE), serving with the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance in Egypt and as Regimental Medical Officer with the 3rd Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli.
