Description
An unidentified Australian soldier sniping in the trenches at Pope's Hill. A periscope, and periscope rifle lean against the sandbagged wall. Another rifle has a piece of cardboard fastened around the muzzle, possibly to disguise the profile, or to cast a shadow over the foresight. Original inscription reads: "Sniping the Sniper. Pope's Hill". One of a collection of photographs thought to be taken by 440 Trooper (Tpr) Arthur Lovett, 3rd Light Horse Regiment. Tpr Lovett enlisted as a 20 year old bank clerk from Hobart, Tasmania. He served at Gallipoli until August 1915, when he was evacuated sick to England. In December 1915 he was granted a commission in the British Army.
