Embroidered shoulder title : Ethiopian Forces, Korea
Curved shoulder title made of khaki woollen fabric overlaid with a section of yellow cotton. Hand embroidered through both layers of fabric is the word 'ETHIOPIA' in red cotton. The yellow fabric is bordered by concentric rings of green/blue, gold and red thread. The green/blue ring has faded to a pale grey colour.
Shoulder title worn by members of the three Ethiopian battalions which were attached to the 7th US Infantry Division as part of the United Nations force in Korea, from June 1951 until withdrawn in 1954. The three battalions, each of approximately 1200 men, were referred to as 'Kagnew' ('Conqueror') and together suffered nearly 700 casualties during the war. 1 Kagnew Battalion served in Korea from June 1951 to April 1952, 2 Kagnew Battalion from April 1952 to April 1953, and 3 Kagnew Battalion between April 1953 and April 1954.
