Studio portrait of Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Arthur Justin Sanford Hutchinson. A special graduate of the Royal Military College in November 1914, he applied for, and was granted, a commission with the 9th Australian Light Horse. L Cpl Hutchinson embarked for overseas from Melbourne aboard HMAT Karoo (A10) on 11 January 1915. While on Gallipoli, he was promoted to Captain and in May of 1916 he transferred to the 58th Battalion. In June 1916, while en route to the Western Front, he was promoted to Major (Maj). Maj Hutchinson was killed in action in France on 19 July 1916. He was 21 years old.
