Collection relating to the Second World War service of 433259 Flying Officer Robert 'Bob' Joseph Kain, No 6 Bombing and Gunnery School, Ottowa, Canada, 1943-1945.

Wallet 1 of 3 contains 155 airgraphs written from Flying Officer Kain to his wife Marcia, and children Margaret and Ann.

Wallet 1, Folder 1 contains airgraphs dated from 28 August 1943 to 30 December 1943. Kain writes about his travel to Ottowa through the United States of America and western Canada, the difficulties and delays in receiving mail, seeing snow for the first time, beginning flying training and the aerial observers course (AOC), taking photographs in Canada, preparing for his exams, and travel to Invermere over the Christmas period.

Wallet 1, Folder 2 contains airgraphs written between 2 February 1944 and 28 June 1944. Kain writes about taking his exams and his graduation ceremony, attaining a position as an instructor, the quality and amenities of the commissioned officers quarters, travel to New York City, Utica, and Rochester, and organising concert parties.

Wallet 1, Folder 3 contains airgraphs written between 1 July 1944 and 19 January 1945. Kain writes about leave and travel to Houston, Chicago, New Orleans, and Detroit, his promotion to the position of Flying Officer, and family news.

Wallet 2 contains 16 telegraphs, 1 birthday card, 2 letters, and 17 air mail letters from Robert to Marcia, and one handwritten note with no known recipient.

Wallet 3 contains an album of photographs and postcards taken and collected by Robert Kain during his time in Canada and the United States of America. Many of the photogrpahs relate to events that are described by Kain in his airgraphs to his wife.
