Studio portrait of 76 Private (Pte) Reginald Arthur Hast. A telephone mechanic at the Postmaster General's Department (PMG) prior to enlistment, he embarked with Headquarters of the 30th Battalion. He later transferred to the 2nd Divisional Signal Company with the rank of Sapper (Spr). Hast's brother, 1023 Private (Pte) Thomas Harold Hast of Armidale, NSW, originally of the 20th Battalion but later of the 2nd Divisional Signal Company, served with his brother. Reginald Hast died on 17 October 1917 of wounds received at the battle of Passchendaele. Thomas Hast erected a cross at Lijssenthoek Cemetery; the inscription on the cross over the grave reads in part: "In loving memory of my dear brother."
