Utting, Philip Edward (Sergeant, b.1889 - d.1917)
Description
Collection relating to 36 Sergeant Philip Edward Utting, 20 Battalion, France and Belgium. Collection consists of a two paged original handwritten letter dated 12 November 1917, written by Cpl George Linsley. The letter is addressed to Miss Eliza Gale and describes the death of Sgt Utting. Also included is a shrapnel damaged photograph of Eliza Anne Gale, found on Utting's body at the time of his death. See also 1DRL/0587 for another collection relating to Philip Edward Utting. Linsley was promoted to Sergeant following Utting's death, then was himself killed five months later.
