Description
Portrait of five Australian soldiers. Identified, left, is 2904 Sergeant (Sgt) Angus Valentine Wilson, 4th Pioneer Battalion (middle row, left), a milkman from Williamstown, Victoria, and 1144 Private (later Lieutenant) Ernest Edward Cruickshank (back row, left), 18th Battalion, a clerk from Sydney, New South Wales. Sgt Angus Wilson originally embarked with the 14th Battalion and was transferred to the 4th Pioneer Battalion in March 1916. Sgt Wilson was awarded the Military Medal for courage and determination while leading a platoon on the night of 4 July, 1918. His platoon marked out a communication trench between the front line and support trenches under heavy enemy fire. (See also P10550.679) Private Ernest Cruickshank was awarded the Military Medal for his conduct on 19 May 1918. As a sergeant he took command of his company when all his officers had been wounded. His company pressed forward with their attack, capturing their sector of the objective under his leadership.
