Description

Small glass vial with glass stopper and copper alloy spring. A paper label with the manufacturer's details printed in red 'CHAS. OGG & Co PHARMACISTS / 76 COLLINS ST'; handwritten in black ink under this is 'Laudanum Poison / [illegible] pain 10 or 15 drops / on cotton / for toothache.'

History / Summary

Laudanum is a tincture of opium containing approximately 10% powdered opium by weight (the equivalent of 1% morphine). Reddish-brown and extremely bitter, laudanum contains almost all of the opium alkaloids, including morphine and codeine.
