Studio portrait of 766 Private (Pte) John William McPhee, 15th Battalion. A labourer from Bell via Dalby, Queensland prior to enlistment, Pte McPhee embarked with E Company from Melbourne on HMAT Ceramic 22 December 1914. Whilst serving at Gallipoli he was wounded in action. Later becoming ill in Egypt he returned to Australia on 31 August 1915. Whilst in Australia, he went missing and was declared a deserter, but in fact he had returned to Brisbane and re-enlisted under the name of John McPhee and with the service number of 2367. He then embarked from Brisbane with the 4th Reinforcements, 42nd Battalion on HMAT Boonah on 21 October 1916. Whilst in England he became ill and was admitted to the Fargo Military Hospital where, on 3 February 1917, aged 25, he died of pneumonia and was buried in the Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire, England.
