Studio portrait of 2350 Private (Pte) John Richard Byrne. A labourer from Fitzroy, Vic, Pte Byrne embarked with the 5th Reinforcements, 24th Battalion, aboard RMS Osterley on 29 September 1915. Pte Byrne was wounded and hospitalised on two occasions at Mouquet Farm, Pozieres, on 22 March 1916, and later at Messines on 21 March 1917. He was promoted to Lance Corporal (L Cpl) on 27 October 1917. L Cpl Byrne was killed in action in France on 1 September 1918.
