Studio portrait of 3823 Private (Pte) Benjamin Alfred Leyshon, 3rd Battalion from Sydney, NSW. An 18 year old mail packer with previous service in the Militia with the 26th Infantry Battalion prior to enlisting in the AIF on 24 August 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 12th Reinforcements from Sydney on 30 December 1915 aboard HMAT Medic (A7). Following further training in Egypt, he proceeded to France where he joined the 3rd Battalion on 25 May 1916. Pte Leyshon was killed in action near La Boisselle on 21 July 1916 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
