Studio portrait of 4365 Private (Pte) James Bracken, 14th Battalion from Richmond, Victoria. A 29 year old engineer prior to enlisting on 12 October 1914, he embarked for overseas with the 1st Reinforcements from Melbourne on 22 December 1914 aboard HMAT Berrima (A35). While serving at Gallipoli, he was wounded in action on 19 May 1915 and evacuated to Malta for medical treatment. In September 1915 he returned to Australia. After recovering from his wounds, Pte Bracken transferred to the Anzac Police Corps and re-embarked for overseas with service number 1335 with the 11th Reinforcements of the 23rd Battalion from Melbourne on 23 April 1916 aboard RMS Malwa. On arrival in Egypt, Pte Bracken was employed on police duties in the Canal Zone until July 1918 when he embarked for England. He joined the 14th Battalion in France on 23 August 1918 and was killed in action near Amiens on 19 September 1918. Pte Bracken is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
