Studio portrait of 1137 Sergeant (Sgt) George Walter Hyden, 51st Battalion. A farmer from Carnarvon, WA, Hyden embarked as a Private (Pte) with the 1st Reinforecements, 11th Battalion from Melbourne aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 22 December 1914. Pte Hyden served at Gallipoli then the Western Front. Following a transfer to the 51st Battalion and with the rank of Sergeant, Hyden was killed in action at Mouquet Farm, France, on 3 September 1916, aged 22.
