Description

Studio portrait of 4925 Private (Pte) William Henry Ladd, 8th Battalion. A tailor's cutter from Alphington, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Ladd had previously been rejected due to poor eyesight and embarked with the 15th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Wiltshire on 7 March 1916. Later transferring to the 59th Battalion, he was reported as missing in action. A subsequent court of enquiry determined that he had been killed in action on 19 July 1916 at Fleurbaix, France, aged 21. Having no known grave, he is commemorated on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, France.
