Description

82 page manuscript entitled "War Service History of Bandsman Pte. Donald Kenneth Tweedie NX51579 2/20th Bn. 8th Division 1940-1946". The first section of the manuscript provides a brief summary of the service of the 2/20th Battalion during the Second World War. The main body of the text relates to the service and experiences of NX51579 Pte D.K. Tweedie. The text examines the experiences of Pte. Tweedie in Singapore and Malaya prior to the Japanese surrender. Most of the content deals with the time post-surrender and Tweedie's experiences as a POW in Changi, along the Burma-Thailand Railway, and in Japan. The account relates information on the work POWs undertook, rations eaten, the standard of medical care and their experiences with the Japanese guards. Appendices include copies and transcripts of war letters relating to Pte. Tweedie, assorted maps relating to the areas discussed in the manuscript, the final appendix is a tribute to specific comrades of Pte. Tweedie. Named soldiers in the Appendix include Pte. G.F.
