Description

16 page typed memoir titled 'My time', written in 1997 by NX49101 Signalman (Sig) John William Chippendale, 8 Corps of Signals who was interned as a prisoner of war of the Japanese from 1942 until 1945. The memoir details the military experience of Sig Chippendale, from the time of his enlistment in October 1941 until he returned to Australia and was discharged from the Australian Army in January 1946. He writes descriptively of his time as a prisoner of war including his experiences at the Selerang Barracks at Changi, Tavoy, Tamarkan, and Brankassi. He details the conditions under which he worked on the Burma Thailand Railway, including treatment by the Japanese guards and the illnesses and medical conditions suffered by himself and other prisoners. Mention is made several times of the '...very good Doctors to which we all owe our lives', including Dr Rolly Richards, Major Hobbs, Major Kranz, Major Chalmers, Dr Fisher and Dr Weary Dunlop. Included on the last page is a copy of a contemporary colour photograph of Sig Chippendale marching, presumably for Anzac Day.
