Studio portrait of Captain (Capt) Walter John Rose MC, 3rd Pioneer Battalion. Prior to the First World War, Rose served with the 82nd Barrier Infantry, Citizen Military Forces, and was a metallurgist in Tasmania before enlistment on 27 November 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne on 6 June 1916 aboard HMAT Wandilla (A62). Capt Rose served on the Western Front, where he was awarded the Military Cross: 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He was in charge of artillery roads and mule tracks, supervising their repair and construction, and encouraging the men under shell fire and attacks by aeroplane. His ingenuity in the employment of whatever material came handy, and his determination to complete the work, enabled the roads to be kept open for traffic at all hours.' Capt Rose MC survived the war and returned to Australia in 1919.
