Collection relating to the Second World War service of VX24430 Private Ralph Bevin 'Bev' Tudor, 2/22 Australian Infantry Battalion, Second Australian Imperial Force, Rabaul, New Guinea, 1941.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of one letter from Private Ralph Bevin 'Bev' Tudor to his aunt, Mrs Gladys 'Lal' Nilsson [née Tudor], dated 28 May 1941. This letter was written while Private Tudor was serving with 2/22 Australian Infantry Battalion at Rabaul, New Guinea. In his letter, Private Tudor writes about his favourable impressions of Rabaul, taking photographs of the local area, encounters with the local people, the humid weather, and missing home. This letter includes the original envelope, and nine photographs depicting the environment and people of Rabaul.

History / Summary

Private Ralph Bevin Tudor enlisted to the Second Australian Imperial Force on 10 June 1940, after previously serving with the militia. After a period of training, he was posted to 2/22 Australian Infantry Battalion and served at Rabaul, New Britain, New Guinea, as part of Lark Force. In early 1942, he was taken as a prisoner of war when the Japanese captured the island. Private Bevin is presumed to have died as a prisoner at Rabaul on 8 March 1942. He is commemorated at commemorated at Rabaul Memorial, Rabaul, East New Britain, Papua New Guinea.
