Studio portrait of 2812 Private (Pte) Richard Nicholas Cahill, 8th Battalion. A tobacconist from Hawthorn, Vic, prior to enlistment, Pte Cahill embarked with the 9th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard SS Makarini on 15 September 1915. Following service at Gallipoli Pte Cahill transferred to the 60th Battalion in Egypt. He was wounded in action at Fromelles, France, on 19 July 1916 and died of these wounds on 24 July 1916 at No. 13 General Hospital, Boulogne, France, aged 20. Pte Cahill was one of four brothers who enlisted in the AIF. 730 Pte Francis Cahill died of illness in Melbourne on 22 October 1915. 717 Lieutenant (Lt) Thomas Cahill was killed in action in France on 30 August 1918. 3324 Lt Martin Cahill was awarded a Military Cross (MC) and returned to Australia in December 1918.
