Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 2060 Lance Corporal Percival Frank Tittruf Dolley, 3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion, AIF. Collection consists of two original handwritten letters and one accompanying envelope written in 1917 by then Private Dolley (later Lance Corporal Dolley), to "Miss Roberts" (believed to be Annie Roberts) and "Little Vera" (believed to be Vera Roberts). Annie and Vera were the sisters of 13645 Private Robert Allan Roberts. The letters detail Dolley's Christmas, how he misses home and Australia, and his travels through Europe as part of his active service and leave entitlements. Regarding Christmas, Private Dolley relates that the Christmas of 1917 has been better than his Christmas the previous year in 1916 where he had unwittingly made tea "...with water that a dead German had been soaking in for two days...". Dolley spent his 1917 Christmas in Hospital, and so had eaten well with turkey, pudding, fruits and nuts. Private Dolley worked as a farmer prior to the war.
