Description
Studio portrait of two soldiers, 4996 Private (Pte) Daniel Conway (left), and unidentified (right). A butcher from Berry, NSW, Pte Conway embarked as a member of the 13th Reinforcements with the 20th Battalion, on 5 July 1916 aboard HMAT Ajana (A31). On 29 September 1916 Pte Conway was transferred to the 36th Battalion. In April 1918 he was attached to the 33rd Battalion, C Company, 12 Platoon. On the evening of 25 May 1918 whilst performing ration duty in the front lines at Villers-Bretonneux, Pte Conway was hit by machine gun fire and killed. He is buried at the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery in Fouilloy, France.
