Studio portrait of 29945 Driver (Dvr) Richard Lindsay Gadd, 55th Battery, 14th Field Artillery ...
Studio portrait of 29945 Driver (Dvr) Richard Lindsay Gadd, 55th Battery, 14th Field Artillery Brigade. A farmer of Red Hill, SA, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 120th Howitzer Battery on 3 October 1916 aboard HMAT Aeneas (A60). He died of wounds on 24 April 1918, aged 26, the day before his 27th birthday. His brother 7889 Dvr Henry Clark Gadd, 4th Light Horse Brigade Train, AASC, was serving in France at the same time and after he learned of his brother's death, created an oak memorial photograph frame as well as a brass grave plate [not used on the grave] in honour of his brother. The frame, with a simple marquetry border, contains a photograph of his grave with original marker and a portrait of Dvr Richard Gadd, both displayed in a brass Australia-shaped mount stamped with battle honours Bullecourt, Somme, Ypres, Messines and Lagnicourt. The brass map and the grave plaque are probably made from used shell cases.
