Description
Pair of Japanese traditional wooden geta with a platform (dai) supporting two wooden teeth (ha). A red velveteen covered cord thong (hanao) is threaded through a single hole at the front of the platform, and a pair of holes near the heel and knotted underneath. Each side of the thong carries a decoration of hand painted leaves. The base of one geta only bears two large Japanese characters in pink paint.
History / Summary
These geta were purchased in Japan by 2/42736 Signaller Robert George Elder while he was on leave. Elder served in Korea in 1955-1956 with the Royal Australian Corps of Signals. He sent them to Australia as a gift for his sister, Margaret.
