Identified from left to right, back row: 2489 Private (Pte) Reuben Clarence Smith, 56th Battalion; 2485 Pte Cyril Thomas Smith, 56th Battalion (brother of Reuben Smith) (killed in action in Belgium on 23 September 1917); Tom Murphy (probably 2437 Pte Thomas Joseph Murphy, 56th Battalion); 2455 Pte James Overend, 56th Battalion; and 2414 Pte William Burnett Heath, 56th Battalion. Front row: 2386 Pte Thomas Patrick John Brennan (Bren) Chinnery, 56th Battalion (killed in action in Belgium on 18 October 1917); Bill Smith (probably 2484 Pte William John (Bill) Smith, 56th Battalion); 2456 Pte Thomas Edward (Tom) Overend, 56th Battalion; 3191 Pte John James (Jack) McKie, 55th Battalion; 2434 Pte Ernest John Lee, 56th Battalion (died of wounds in France on 10 April 1918); and 2394 Pte James Heath, 56th Battalion.
