Studio portrait of 2nd Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Herbert Walter John Rhead, 9th Battalion. A school teacher of Rockhampton, Qld, he embarked with the 5th Reinforcements on 16 April 1915 aboard HMAT Kyarra (A55). In February 1916 he was transferred to the 49th Battalion and promoted to the rank of Captain (Capt) two months later. Capt Rhead was killed in action on 7 June 1917 in Belgium, aged 26.
