Studio portrait of 3910 Private (Pte) William Claude Phillips, 23rd Battalion. A chairmaker from South Melbourne, Victoria, Pte Phillips was 20 years old when he enlisted in August 1915. Later promoted to corporal, he was killed in action on 12 May 1917 at Bullecourt, France.
