Description

Studio portrait of 4366 Private (Pte) Horace Talmage Starkey, 32nd Battalion. A labourer from Wilmington, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 11th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 7 November 1916 aboard HMAT Afric (A19) for Plymouth England. He was hospitalised with illness during the latter part of the voyage to England and once again after arrival. Consequently he did not join his battalion on the Western Front near Grevillers, France, until 12 April 1917. He was re-allotted the service number 4366A on 6 March 1918. Pte Starkey was wounded in action near Corbie on 29 April 1918 but was able to remain on duty. Pte Starkey was killed in action near Amiens, France, on 24 June 1918. He was aged 24 years.
