Studio portrait of 4612 Private (Pte) Christopher Charles Withy, 32nd Battalion. A labourer from Adelaide, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 12th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 16 December 1916 aboard HMAT Berrima (A35) for Devonport, England. After training in England he proceeded to France and joined his battalion on the Western Front near Racquinghem. Pte Withy was wounded in action near Amiens on 18 June 1918 and was able to re-join his unit 9 days later. Pte Withy was killed in action near Amiens on 1 August 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 19 years. His older brother 3305 Pte Walter William Withy, 27th Battalion, was killed in action near Montauban on 5 November 1916 aged 20 years.
