Studio portrait of 2123 Private (Pte) Harold Evered Symes, 32nd Battalion. A labourer from Glenelg, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements from Adelaide on 7 February 1916 aboard HMAT Miltiades (A28) for Suez. In early April 1916 Pte Symes was transferred to the 48th Battalion, was hospitalised with illness from early May to mid-August and on discharge was transferred to the 8th Training Battalion in England. From England he was transferred back to the 32nd Battalion and proceeded to France to join his unit on the Western Front near Armentieres. On 1 December 1916 Pte Symes was hospitalised with trench feet and evacuated to England for treatment, recuperation and furlough for nine months before rejoining the battalion near Racquinghem. He attended Bombing School training from late October to early November. Pte Symes was wounded in action near Messines on 19 November 1917 and died of these wounds the following day in 53 Casualty Clearing Station. He was aged 29 years.
