Studio portrait of 1855 Private (Pte) William Roy Briggs, 10th Battalion. A farmer from Port Broughton, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 5th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 20 April 1915 aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) for Suez. He served with his battalion at Gallipoli from early July 1915 until the 10th Battalion was withdrawn to Egypt at the end of the year. In late February 1916 Pte Briggs was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to England for further training with the 13th Training Battalion. In late September 1916 he proceeded to France and was transferred to the 32nd Battalion on the Western Front near Strazeele, France. In February 1917 Pte Briggs was evacuated to England with illness and was not able to rejoin the 32nd Battalion until late August. In early September 1917 he was detached to No 8 machine Gun Company. Whilst on detachment Pte Briggs was killed in action near Ypres, Belgium, on 4 October 1917. He was aged 21 years.
