Studio portrait of 3690 Private (Pte) Alfred Richard Plane, 50th Battalion. A draper from Adelaide, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 10th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 4 August 1917 aboard HMAT Themistocles for Glasgow, Scotland. Following two months with the 13th Training Battalion at Codford, he proceeded to join his battalion on the Western Front near Amiens, France in late January 1918. Pte Plane was wounded in action on 2 February 1918 but remained on duty. Pte Plane was killed in action near Villers-Bretonneux on 25 April 1918. He was aged 19 years.
