Description

Studio portrait of 3521 Private (Pte) Frank Charles Watson, 10th Battalion. A bootmaker from Kensington, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 11th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 27 October 1915 aboard HMAT Benalla (A24) for Suez. On 29 February 1916 he was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. A month later he was appointed Lance Corporal (L Cpl). L Cpl Watson was wounded in action on 16 August 1916 and required treatment and recuperation before he was able to re-join his battalion in mid-October. He was promoted to Corporal in early April 1917 and then to Sergeant (Sgt) seven weeks later. Sgt Watson was reported missing in action near Messines, Belgium, on 8 June 1917 and was subsequently confirmed to have been killed in action on that date. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 20 years.
