Studio portrait of 4761 Private (Pte) William Henry East, 10th Battalion. A gardener from Forest Range, South Australia, prior to enlistment with his 25 year old brother, 4760 Pte Albert Harold East, they embarked with the 15th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 9 March 1916 aboard RMS Mongolia for Suez. In late May 1916 they were both transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France, in June 1916. Pte William East was killed in action near Albert on 4 September 1916 and is buried in the London Cemetery and Extension, Longueval, France. He was aged 20 years. Pte Albert East continued to serve with the 50th Battalion and was wounded in action on 11 August 1918 near Albert, France, and was evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation before returning to Australia for discharge, medically unfit, on 30 July 1920. A third brother, 474 Pte Walter Leonard East, 10th Battalion, was killed in action at Gallipoli on 15 May 1915 and is buried in the Lone Pine Cemetery. He was aged 20 years.
