Studio portrait of 2409 Private (Pte) Arthur Harold Funnell, 50th Battalion. A clerk from Norwood, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 5th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 21 September 1916 aboard HMAT Commonwealth for Plymouth England. After four weeks training in England he proceeded to France and joined his battalion on the Western Front in mid-December 1916 when he was appointed a Lance Corporal (L Cpl). L Cpl Funnell was killed in action near Noreuil and is buried in the Noreuil Australian Cemetery, France. He was aged 23 years.
