Description

Portrait of 2239 Sergeant (Sgt) Albert Winter, 50th Battalion from Langhornes Creek, South Australia. A 22 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 5 March 195, he embarked for overseas as a Private with the 6th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 23 June 1915 aboard HMAT Borda. After serving with the 10th Battalion at Gallipoli, he returned to Egypt and transferred to the 50th Battalion prior to embarking for France in June 1916. During 1917, he was promoted up through the ranks to reach the rank of Sergeant on 5 November 1917. After being wounded in action at Messines Ridge, Belgium on 7 June 1917, he received medical treatment and returned to the 50th Battalion five weeks later. Sgt Winter was killed in action at Villers-Bretonneux on 25 April 1918 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
